Life. It ain’t for sissies, that’s a fact. But what separates the “men” from the “boys” is how well we roll with what life throws our way. Sometimes it’s an easily caught underhanded throw and other times life comes in hot like Dale Steyn with a one times fast bowl that you dive for and totally miss (the only thing you catch being roasties). Eish.
Ludacris said, “Roll Out” and Limp Bizkit said, “Keep rollin’, rollin’, rollin’, rollin’!” but when life gets tough, it’s hard to find the steam to keep fighting the good fight. Sometimes when shit gets a little hectic and you find yourself “rolling in the deep,” it pays to have a sense of humour and find a way to laugh about it.
Usually, our ability to “roll with it” can be attributed to by a numerous of different factors:
- Your overall mindset
- The people you choose to surround yourself with
- Institutions you spend a lot time in i.e work, school or even gymnasiums (although, that last one often backfires terribly when some are concerned. Chicken from the pharmacy will do that to you).
- Your adaptability to certain things and situations
These CinnaBrons are the heat! If you’re eating provitas and cheese in anticipation for payday, please take this opportunity to roll in the dough. Ha. Whilst waiting for it to prove though, why not do something productive. Practice your Adele impersonation, perfect your twerk in case of a sudden-death dance off or write a list of names of people you want to share these CinnaBrons with. (I shared mine with some of my work colleagues. Hiiiiii Collectiv!)
The frosting and toppings are all about you and how you choose to “roll with it” maybe you’re all about melted white chocolate and toasted macadamias or melted milk chocolate and pistachio dust. By all means, top how you please.
This one is for Skye who teaches me the importance of just rolling with it. It’s for Nikki-Kim who teaches me that no matter how bad we think it is, life rolls on and lastly, it’s to Varsity College Durban North, the unconventional institution that equipped me to roll with all of life’s punches so that I could roll on to the career that I have and the be person that I am today.

For the Cinnamon Rolls:
1 packet of Instant Yeast
1 cup of Milk
½ cup of Butter, divided in half
¼ teaspoon of salt
3 cups of Cake Flour
½ tablespoon of Cinnamon
¼ cup + 1 tablespoon of White Sugar
Chopped Pecan Nuts
For the Topping:
4 tablespoons of Butter
2 and a half cups of Icing Sugar
1 x 250g tub of Cream Cheese
¼ teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
The other half of the chopped Pecan Nuts for sprinkling.
- In a pot on the stove, heat the milk and half of the butter together until combined. Remove from heat and allow to cool to 110 degrees celcius.
- Place milk mix into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle yeast over and leave for 10 minutes, add the tablespoon of sugar, the salt and stir.
- Add flour in, half a cup at a time and stir it in as you add it. The dough will be sticky and when it is too thick to keep stirring, place it on a floured surface and knead well for a minute until a loose ball forms.
- Rinse and dry mixing bowl and coat with a thin layer of oil and put dough ball in.
- Cover with clingwrap and allow to prove for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size. What you do whilst you wait is your business. I won’t judge.
- When proving is done, melt remaining butter and roll dough out into a thin rectangle on a floured surface.
- Brush rectangle with the butter and top with the cinnamon, sugar and half of the chopped pecans.
- Starting from one end, roll up the dough and place the whole roll seam side down.
- With a serrated knife, cut slices of the roll (about 1.5 to 2 inches wide) and place in a well buttered 8X8 inch square pyrex dish.
- Brush with remaining butter, cover dish with clingwrap and leave to rise on the stove top whilst the oven preheats to 180 degrees centigrade.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Whilst baking, make frosting by combining the frosting ingredients. Top with frosting whilst warm and sprinkle pecans on top.
Health Hack: Forgo the frosting fatty!
